Questions

Everything I'm asked at walkthroughs, in one place. If yours isn't here, text me; I'll answer and probably add it.

Plowing

Do I need to call when it snows?

No. Once about 5 cm has fallen I'm on my way to every laneway on the route. The route status page shows when I'm out and when the route is done.

What if it snows all day?

I plow once about 5 cm has built up and again when it stops, so you can always get in and out. If it's coming down fast, please be patient: I'm working my way around the route, and every plow company is stretched in the same storm. On the per-plow plan each pass counts as one plow; the Season Plan covers them all, however many it takes.

When will you get to me?

I work the route in the most efficient order, so I can't promise a set time. Overnight snow is usually cleared before the morning commute, and the route is small enough that the last laneway isn't far behind the first. Signed-up customers come first. One-time call-ins are normally plowed after the route is done, unless I happen to be right next door.

Do you salt or sand?

No. On residential laneways I only plow. If you have a slope or a walkway that ices up, keep a pail of grit or sand by the door. Keeping to one thing is what lets me keep the route small and get to everyone the same morning: trips back to the salt yard to reload would slow the whole route.

Do you shovel walkways, steps or decks?

As a rule I don't like to shovel walks. Staying in the truck is what keeps the route quick for everyone. However, I am fit and able so if you're a senior, away on vacation, or there's a particular reason you need a walk cleared, ask me and we'll work it out. Decks and roofs aren't included, and I don't typically haul snow away from residential properties, but I can help facilitate and coordinate almost anything with my contacts if you need something like this done.

What about drifting on a clear day?

Wind can close a country laneway without a flake falling. If drifting has blocked you in, text me. If I need to come out specially it counts as one plow at your per-plow rate, on either plan, and I'll tell you that before I come. The route status page has a ready-written request.

Your property

Will the plow damage my lawn or gravel?

We set marker stakes along the edges at the walkthrough, and on gravel I run the blade a little high until the base freezes. Some gravel on the lawn edge, scuffed turf and a few ruts when the ground isn't frozen are normal for a country laneway, not damage.

Where does the snow go?

Where we agree at the walkthrough, on each side of the laneway. Never onto the road, which Ontario's Highway Traffic Act prohibits, and never onto a neighbour's property.

What if the township plow blocks my entrance?

If it happens within 12 hours of my visit, text me and I'll come back and open it at no charge, once per storm.

What if something does get damaged?

Tell me within 48 hours, with photos, and we'll look at it together. If my plowing caused it, I'll repair it or pay the reasonable repair cost. I'm not responsible for unmarked hidden objects or things left in the laneway, which is why the walkthrough and the stakes matter.

I have a gate, or a private road shared with neighbours.

Gates are fine: leave it open on snow days or share the code, and it stays between us. Shared private roads I treat as a commercial job, with one bill the neighbours split; see commercial plowing.

Prices and paying

How do I pay?

Per plow: I email one invoice on the 1st of each month for the month before, due within 15 days, by e-Transfer or by card through the secure payment link on the invoice. Season Plan: half when the agreement is signed and half on January 15, by e-Transfer or credit card. Paying in full at signing is welcome.

Is the Season Plan worth it?

It's priced at about 19 plows. That's how I set the price, not a limit: the plan covers every 5 cm plow, however many there are. I set per-plow prices 20% higher, because paying per plow gives the business less stability, and the Season Plan rewards you with a lower rate. Most winters, a laneway here is plowed somewhere between 15 and 22 times. In an average winter, paying per plow usually comes out about even with the Season Plan or a little higher; in a heavy winter, the Season Plan comes out much farther ahead. The plan is for people who want one known price before the first flake. If you'd rather pay for exactly what falls, pay per plow; the service is the same.

Do you charge extra in a big storm?

No surcharges of any kind. A long storm can mean two plows on the per-plow plan, one during and one after, because that's two visits. The Season Plan covers both.

Are prices before HST?

Yes. 13% HST is added to every price, and your agreement and each invoice show the total. A $115 plow comes to $129.95.

Can I cancel?

In the first ten days after signing, yes, for any reason. After that it depends on the plan. Per plow: either of us can end it with 14 days' notice by text or email, and you only pay for plows already done. The Season Plan is one price for the whole winter, so it runs the whole winter. There's no plow limit: I don't charge more in a heavy winter, and the payments don't stop in a light one. But life happens. If something changes for you, like selling the property or a hard stretch, talk to me. I'm not going to hold anyone to something unreasonable, and we'll work out what's fair. If I end it early, I refund the unused part of what you've paid.

Timing and trust

What if your truck breaks down?

I carry spares for the usual plow failures and keep the truck ready from mid-November. If something bigger stops me, I post it on the route status page and may send a qualified back-up operator. Per plow, you only pay for plows done. And if a breakdown leaves you stuck, tell me: I'll be fair and reasonable about putting it right.

When does the season start and end?

November 15, 2026 to April 15, 2027. If it snows outside those dates, I'll plow on request at your per-plow rate.

How far do you go?

Country laneways within about 20 minutes of Orangeville: Mono, Amaranth, East Garafraxa, Alton, Caledon Village and the hamlets between. The route map has a checker for your road or postal code.

Do you take commercial lots?

Sure do. Let me know what you need when you call or email and we'll discuss your requirements. Every job starts with a site visit and a written scope. Details here.

Can I get a price without a walkthrough?

Yes, for standard and long laneways: tell me the length and the road and I'll confirm the rate the same day. Estate laneways I haven't plowed before are priced after the walkthrough. Every laneway gets a walkthrough before the season anyway, so we can agree where the snow goes and set the stakes.
